Bring On the New Fonts Already
I was watching this video on the new fonts that Microsoft is introducing with Vista, and they’re talking about getting the budget approved by Bill Gates himself, since this was a multi-million project. Bill said no the first two times they tried to sell it. Basically, his argument was that there was no guarantee that people would use these fonts, since they already had many fonts available to them, like Times New Roman, Arial, Courier and Verdana. If they brought new fonts out there, how where they going to ensure they’d get used?
Hello!? Thousands of desperate webdesigners out there, eagerly anticipating new, legible, beautiful fonts (even if they’re from Microsoft), sick and tired of using Verdana and Georgia, unwilling to specify Arial? Don’t worry, they will get used. People don’t specify fonts, designers specify fonts, people use them. The average Word user uses whatever font is specified as a default. If you let people specify their own font, they use Comic Sans.
